Be prepared

Be prepared...isn't that the boy scout's motto or something?

First off, I will say that my absolutely absence from this blog has been due to the fact that I have been seriously slacking on my running this past month. Spring break I went to Virginia, and DC, and then Vegas a week later...naturally, not much running took place during those weeks. Once I came home and got back into it, I did a 17-miler one weekend, and a 21-miler the next. I wish I could say they were easy, but they weren't. After I was done with the 21 miles I laid on my living room floor and cried. (I'm a girl - we are emotional!)

So basically...I should have listened to those boy scouts, or runners world, or any other professional who makes a training plan and suggests you stick with it for optimal results. I am planning on doing 26.2, but I am not expecting it to be easy. Or fun. Or painless. Or completed in less than 4.5 hours. If I was more prepared...perhaps. But I do think I will be able to do it.

I guess we'll see.

Spring is here!

Todays Run: 4.0 miles
Time: 36 mins

Spring is legit here. It was 73 degrees this afternoon in Milford. Nate is trying to ease back into running after injuring his foot last week, so we did a nice and easy four miles. I felt pretty good the whole time. We ran down by the beach, and so it was nice to get the cool breeze from the sound while we were running. Here's hoping Nate heals up and we are able to get back to training!

Tonight we made potatoes better than the chicken with sweet potatoes, and it might have been better than using regular potatoes. Since I was in class all evening, Nate was in charge of the cooking. The chicken came out perfect - I couldn't have done it better myself.

In other news, it's HUNGER GAMES WEEKEND on Saturday! I am SO EXCITED. CANNOT WAIT.

Cheers!

Back in the saddle

After taking a little more than a week off, I was able to ease through a 3 mile run yesterday.  My foot felt great but I didn't want to push it, I took it easy and ran about 2.5 miles, while Dana went off ahead and completed the 3 miles.  We ran an out and back so Dana was able to catch up with me at the end of the run.  I'm planning on taking it easy this week with 3-4 mile runs, working up to a long run next sunday.  May the odds be ever in my favor!!!

Saturday, March 10, 2012

I wanted to post some pictures from the 25K.  The first picture is from the start, a bunch of other sharks members, you can barely see Dana, and I am hidden behind all the tall people.  Its funny how we are all starting our watches, we're all so reliant on our technology!
This second picture is us crossing the "finish line" at 15.5 miles.  I was very happy with our run and I felt fairly good the entire run.
I ended up hurting my foot at the gym during a 3 mile run and I'm going to take a few days off of running and let my body heal itself.  I shouldn't loose too much ground and I am keeping fit on the bike!

Long Run!

Today's Run: 15.5 miles
Time: 2 hours 20 mins

This was basically the longest run we have done since the beginning of September, and I must say, it went pretty well. I felt like the first ten miles FLEW by. The last 5.5 were a little rough, and my legs were fairly sore, but all in all, it was a really good run. We ran it with the running group that we joined, the Shoreline Sharks. It is so much easier to do a long run when your course is planned out, you know you have aid stations every 2-3 miles, and there's other people running along with you. I can definitely say that 15.5 miles was a whole lot more enjoyable than if Nate and I had just done it on Milford roads by ourselves. It also forced us to get up and get it out of the way early - the run started at 10 a.m, we were done by 12:30, and still had the rest of the day to get other things accomplished (namely eating and sitting around, though I did manage to start a paper that I have due this week). I am actually kinda, sorta looking forward to our run next Sunday (another awesome 16 miles)!

Last night, we made potatoes better than the chicken again (absolutely, without a doubt, one of my favorite meals, in the universe). We had it last night and again tonight for dinner, and now I am making homemade chicken stock with the leftover carcass. Roasted chicken is an awesome money saver...five dollars, two meals of roast chicken, and probably 2-3 meals of soup.

Cheers!

Blogging is hard.

Ok, so, blogging is not really hard, but somehow I can't seem to find the time to update. Sigh. It's not that I don't want to. My life is just so busy?

Last night's run was supposed to be ten miles, but it was cold/rainy/snowy outside, so doing it outdoors was not really an option. I did NOT want to run ten miles on a treadmill; however, I did attempt it. I got as far as six, then told Nate that I would do the extra four today. Which I now don't feel like doing. But I will. Ugh.  On the plate for tomorrow: 12 miles. I don't care how cold it is, if it is moderately dry, it's happening outside.

Also last night, I had a huge craving for wings, so we went to Buffalo Wild Wings. (Once again, I was so hungry I failed to take a photo of my meal before diving in). I ordered 18 wings - 6 parmesan garlic, 6 asian zing, and 6 honey bbq. I ate about 16 or 17 of them, and when I was done, our waitress told me that she was proud of me. I also had a "Mountain Berry Tea" (ehhh would not order again) and a "Black Cherry Mojito" (very good, but veryyyy sweet).

OK so, I resolve to update more in the future. Cheers!

Winter?

Today's Run: 6.0 miles
Time: 52 min 30 sec

This "winter" is possibly the best thing that has happened to me in like, ever. It is mid-February, and we have been able to do a large majority of our runs outside. I wish every winter was like this. That being said, I also cannot WAIT for spring.

We did 8 miles yesterday morning, which was a bit rough, because we woke up at 7:30 am and we were out on the road by 9:00. I had to stop once due to a cramp, but other than that it was ok - just a bit slow. Tonight's run was awesome. I really enjoy running when it is dark out. The temperature was basically perfect, as well - high 40's/low 50's. At first I didn't feel like doing it, and kind of complained, but Nate convinced me and I am quite glad he did.

I have worked up a considerable appetite, and so I am off to get some Mexican food. Pictures to follow, perhaps. Cheers!

Oh hey there, blog. It's been awhile.

Today's run: 12.4 miles
Time: 1 hour 53 min 40 sec

Ok so, this week was supposed to be a week packed with running. It was not. Nate became extremely ill Wednesday night and it carried over into Thursday and Friday. I didn't catch it, thankfully, but I still felt slightly under the weather myself. Needless to say, we made our glorious comeback today with the Shoreline Sharks 20k in Milford. Nice course, very similar to the Milford half marathon that I did back in September. Today was positively FRIGID, however. Worst running weather in the world. It was roughly 15 degrees when the race started, and for the first mile I was freezing cold. Even with my gloves on, it felt like my fingers were going to freeze off. I eventually warmed up, and it was a pretty good run. Knee held up fine, with no soreness at all. Given the distance, that's sort of a miracle. Right now I am totally exhausted but feel good otherwise.

Tonight we decided to make an awesome pizza margherita. We baked off some whole wheat crust, rolled out thin. Then we added a little pizza sauce, shredded mozzarella, fresh mozzarella, fresh sliced tomato, and basil. Here it is pre-baking:

It came out awesome. Nate and I finished off almost the whole thing between the two of us. Long runs always make my (already quite healthy) appetite even more hungry. Post-baked:

Cheers!

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

It's time for my first installment of The G.B.U.
The Good: On Sunday, before the superbowl, Dana and I ran our first group race as members of the Shoreline Sharks.  The name of the race: Run From The Pack 4 Miler.  The game: Runners go out at their goal pace (e.g. 12 min milers go first, then 10, then 9, etc) and the chase pack runs last at a 6 min mile and tries to pass each group.  If each group runs at their goal pace then it should all cumulate into a mad dash in the last 1/4 mile to beat the chase pack.
When Dana and I got there we were asked what our goal pace was.  We had been running at a 9 to 930 mile recently and so I proposed we could run a 9 min or 8:30 mile at best.  The race director told me they were only sending out groups at 1 min intervals and then told us we had no choice but to go out at an 8 min mile.
We watched a few groups go out until it was on our turn to run.  We had 4 people in our group and we all went out hard.  My GPS watch said we started at a 7:15 pace.  Our pace quickly slowed and by 1 mile we were hovering at a 7:50 pace.  One of the runners in our pack dropped back around this time and since he was running slower than an 8 min mile we left him behind.  Dana and I started chatting the other remaining pack runner, A nice guy about our age from Boston who turned out to be quite a decent runner.  The route was an out and back and at the 2 mile mark we stopped for a sip of water.  We were keeping our pace pretty steady and kept a sub 8 for the next 1.5 miles.  With a half mile to go Dana looked behind us to see one of the chase pack quickly approaching.  With the finish line in sight the chase pack caught up with us and we had to hand over $5.00, ( to benefit the running club).
Overall we had a good run, a fun time, and we are looking forward to the next Sharks event.

The Bad:  We only ran 4 miles on Sunday, when we had 8 on the schedule.  Its OK tho because this coming week we run 6 days in a row.
The Ugly: The Superbowl...... Need I say more?

I love Saturdays!

Yesterdays run: 7 miles + 4 hill sprints
Time: 62 min

I find it really remarkable how the temperature of my surroundings impacts my run. On Tuesday evening, Nate and I did our run at the Edge. It was completely packed - we even had to wait for a treadmill for five or ten minutes. The inside of the building was disgusting, hot, sweaty, humid, etc etc. I had sweat pouring off me the entire time and I felt like crap. Last night, however, was a completely different story. The gym was far less crowded and the temperature was about ten degrees cooler.  My seven mile run was extremely easy - I'd almost go so far as to call it enjoyable. Tuesday's run gave me flashbacks to our 85 degree, ninety percent humidity first marathon - something I never wish to repeat again.

Today is Saturday, which means OFF DAY, which means no running!!! I slept until noon (a rarity for me) and then ate leftovers from last night's meal. Speaking of which...(yesterday was an extremely tasty food day!)

Gina and I went for sushi at my favorite sushi restaurant. I ordered an eel and cucumber roll, a california roll, and a butterfly roll (probably my favorite roll ever, it's the one wrapped in pink paper).

I also ordered cold noodles, which are amazing from this place, but I ate them too quickly and therefore couldn't take a picture.

For dinner, after our run, Nate and I made "potatoes better than the chicken". Nate's parents made it for us last time we were up there, and it was amazing, so we decided to make it again.

I loooove potatoes. These were seriously the best ones I have ever had. The chicken was great too.

I will leave you with a picture of Bailey, who is looking a bit pudgy as of late...perhaps time to cut down on the kitty food??

Cheers!

A tough go of it

Today I would file my run in the "lets forget this" category.  We set out on a 8 mile run at 10:30 am and we didn't finish the loop until 12:00 pm.  Worst part is we ran the first 3 miles at a 9:00 mile clip.  We started our farklets at this time and it was all downhill (or uphill, I guess...) from there.  I guess running our 7 miler late last night and then going out for our run early today put a bigger stress on my legs then I expected.  Miles 5-7 were brutal.  I was lucky to have Dana running by my side, she really pushed me and I'm happy to say I finished strong.  Thanks Babe!

Only 4 more days until Gronk conquers the world!!!!!

Gronkowski 2012!

73.8 more miles than I'll ever run

Today's run was ok, I felt great for the first 3.5 miles but then I think someone at the Edge put the heat on full blast because it got REAL hot in there.  I gutted out the last mile and a half and hit 3 hill sprints at the end.  Running an easy 5 miles seems like nothing when you look at this movie:

I need to see this movie and I need to watch it yesterday! Just straight bad ass running for 100 miles straight, crushing over 18,000 ft elevation climb and 23,000 ft decent, turning boys into men and men into monsters.  Dudes jumping like mad men on the trails, face planting into snow and ice like a boss. I need to quit being a baby and smash this marathon.  BOOM!
Yesterday's Run: 7 miles, last 20 mins moderate
Time: 61 min

Since Nate was busy doing something for school in NY state all day Sunday, our regular run got pushed back to Monday. I had been crossing my fingers that the temp would be warm enough for an outside run; but alas, it was not. I ran the first 4.5 miles at an easy 9:00 min/mile pace, then bumped it up to an 8:00 min/mile for the last 20 minutes/2.5 miles. In the past, this speed has not been impossible for me to do. It isn't exactly pleasant, I am certainly pushing myself, but it isn't impossible. Six minutes into it, I had to slow the pace down. At one point I stopped completely and felt like I needed to throw up. I am hoping it was just a one-time thing, and I will be able to return to normal next time. I put it back up to the 8:00 min/mile for the last few minutes or so, as sort of a final push.

Today's run is supposed to be 5 miles plus a bunch of hill sprints (three? four? the chart is on the fridge and I am too lazy to get up and check right now, as I ran after a 2-year-old all morning and my legs hurt). Maybe I'll post again later if I'm bored.

Cheers!

Worst. Run. Ever.

Todays Run: 5 miles + 3 x .10 hill sprints
Time: 44 mins

Ok so maybe it was not the worst run I have ever had (a few others certainly stick out in my mind) but it was pretty bad. I was feeling ok, up to the challenge, ready to run an easy 5 and do a few hill sprints. For lunch I made a terrible decision and made myself rice and black beans, one of my favorite quick things to eat. I was hungry again around 4 pm and finished off what I had not eaten a few hours earlier. I have now learned the hard way: do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT eat rice and beans (or probably any sort of mexican food, really) before going to the gym and getting on the treadmill. I had MAJOR tummy and GI issues. I contemplated stopping at the 3 mile mark, but I looked over at Nate and willed myself to keep going in order to stay on pace with him. The hill sprints almost did me in completely. I am SERIOUSLY glad that it is over, and that tomorrow is an off day! I am currently celebrating with a nice glass of wine.

For dinner, I roasted some boneless, skinless chicken breasts in the oven until done. While they were cooking, I sauteed onions and a mixture of red, yellow, and green peppers until soft. I added this AMAZING marinade/dressing that I got from Trader Joe's called "Soyaki" and cooked the veggies for a little longer. Once the chicken was done, I sliced it up, added it to the veggies, and added a little more Soyaki for good measure. I highly recommend anyone with a Trader Joe's nearby to buy it. I served everything over brown rice. Even my still-sensitive stomach was happy with it. No pictures, unfortunately - I ate it too quickly.

Next run - sunday. Until then. Cheers!

OCCUPY PROVIDENCE

Dana and I began our training at the beginning of the year with the goal of running a marathon in the May-June time frame.  Looking on the website Running in the USA proved to be somewhat disappointing.  Our goal weekend (last weekend in May) and the weekends before and after didn't have much to offer.  Our best choices were Sugarloaf Maine, a bit to far of a drive for our taste and the Lake Placid Marathon, a bit to challenging with its hills. We ended up settling on the Providence Marathon .
We're hoping the early may weather will be a change of pace from the 80 degree, 100% humidity that was Burlington last year.  The course looks flat on an easy out and back, something we can definitely handle.

Today we had a cool 5 miles with 3 x .10 mile hill sprints at the end.  I felt good for most of the run and crushed the sprints.

In other news Gronk (Rob Gronkowski) is becoming bigger than football.  I'm pretty sure they had Gronk in mind when they made media week at the super bowl.  If this is gronk comedy gold:
then I can only imagine that during media week Roberto will be going platinum.

Yo Soy Fiesta! Indeed!

FARTLEK. It's a funny word.

Today's run: Fartlek run (in case you didn't already figure that out); 7 miles with 6 x 30 sec. @ 10K-3K pace
Time: 62 mins

I'm happy to say that doing the 6 and 7 mile runs are starting to get easier for me. I mean, they were not exactly difficult before - it was more that I was just extremely lazy and didn't feel like running more than 3  or 4 miles at a time. Now I simply hop on the treadmill and simply resign myself to the fact that the run must be done. I ran the first 3 miles, stopped for some water and a restroom break (don't drink 2+ cups of coffee before a semi-long run when you have an overactive bladder...), then got back on. I did three of the Fartlek's during mile 4 and the other three during mile 5. Mile 6 was a cool down.

In other news, while watching Live! with Kelly Ripa this morning, she gave the audience an interesting tidbit of information: apparently, according to medical professionals, the best treatment for a nosebleed is bacon or some other type of cured ham/pork product. Strangely enough, on Tuesday while visiting my grandmother in New Jersey, she developed a severe nosebleed and we spent a LARGE part of the day in the emergency room trying to get the nosebleed to stop. (It didn't). The ER docs clearly should have tried what I will now refer to as the Kelly method. File that information under "things I wish I knew 2 days ago". I can't imagine my grandmother actually allowing me to shove bacon and/or pork up her nose, though...

Cheers!

Today's run: 5.1 miles, plus 3 hill sprints

The weather this morning/today is SO. FREAKING. NICE. I woke up and reallyyyy didn't feel like driving to the gym and running on a treadmill. Nate and I decided to try an outside run. I was pleasantly surprised when I got out there. It felt like springtime. Definitely one of the best runs I have had in awhile. We did an easy 3 miles at about a 9:30 pace, then found a hill to sprint up, then ended with an easy 2.1 miles back home. With the exception of some minor GI issues around mile 4, it was a great run.

I am spending the afternoon/evening with my grandmother in New Jersey, running errands and cooking dinner. Pictures to follow, perhaps!

Cheers!

SUNDAY FUNDAY

So Sunday is the day when all plans must be put aside to complete the "long run."  Luckily it being week 4 our long run this Sunday was a mere 6 miles with a moderate (hard) 10 min at the end of the run.  We got to the gym around 1230 so we were able to catch both the Pats and Giants win which leads me to the theme of this blog post: celeb look a-likes:

I'm going to throw out two names, and you tell me if you've seen them in the same room together: 49'ers QB Alex Smith and man-hunk Ryan Gosling.  Last time I checked these two have not been seen in the same room together so I think its safe to say that they are the same person.  And for the sad-sacks who have been tweeting that Smith looks like Aaron Rodgers I must say you are sadly mistaken because there are only two people on this earth known have uterus shaped chest sweat marks on their shirts, and those two people are Gosling and Smith.  Case closed.

As for the run today I felt pretty good.  I ran 4.25 min at an easy 9.5 min mile then bumped it to a 9.00 mile to 4.50.  From there I kept a 8.30 pace from 4.50 to 5.00 miles and slammed a 8.00 mile from 5.00 to 5.50.  I cooled down at a 9.00 mile till I hit six and then watched Sir Brady dismantle the BlackBirds and then witnessed Gosling fall short in front of the G-Men.  I'm very excited for a rematch of 2007's superbowl.  Bradski is on a mission this year and he won't stop until Eli's head is on a steak.  PATS.... BOOM.. TheYeahNate... Out..

Lazy Sunday!

Todays Run: Progression Run, 6.0 miles, last 10 minutes moderate pace
Time: 53 min 30 sec

I woke up this morning, saw that it was about 20 degrees outside, and wanted to go right back to sleep. I suppressed the urge and downed several cups of coffee. Once Nate was up, we headed to the gym. I wasn't really feeling like doing the run, but once I got started it wasn't so bad. I did my first 3 miles at an easy 9 minute mile, stopped for about a minute to drink some water, then did another 1.5 miles at the same pace. Once I reached 4.5 miles, I bumped the pace up to an 8:00 min/mile, and did so for ten minutes. I ended back at the 9:00 min/mile to cool down. Overall, I felt like it was a good run. My knee started bothering me around mile 5, but nothing too bad...it's definitely felt MUCH worse.

Cheers!

This is a blog about running

Well, I've done it. I've said in the past that I wouldn't, and now, on a lazy and snowy saturday afternoon, I finally caved.

I have made a blog. Well, actually, Nate did most of the creating.

This is a blog about running. And eating. Two of my favorite pastimes.

Todays run: None. Saturday is our off day!
